Op Art

This deceiving image was made by Bridget Riley and is called Fission. Made in 1963 this image portrays the feeling of movement. With the well placed circled, slanted in different ways and sizes. This is called Op- Art which means shapes, lines and color are manipulated in way =s to stimulate the eye into believing it perceives movement. The movement in the image is of each side hoovering toward the center almost as if its two huge cylinders going in a circle and meeting in the middle.

Pattern

This piece of art was created by Alexander Calder in 1959. It was called the Black: 17 Dots. Pattern means to have a repetitive motif or design. In this image the design is the spherical shapes attached to the wire. And the repetitive design would be the spherical objects. the design continues on one after another, no new shapes or dramatic changes just more of the same maybe a size change but that is all.

Local Color

This image was created by Claude Monet and was called La Grenouillère. It was made in 1869. Local color is the color opposed to optical color and perceptual color, the actual hue of a thing, independent of the ways in which colors might be mixed or how different conditions of light and atmosphere might affect color. In this image with the sun shining on all the objects the shadows start to appear. While the water might be clear, the shadow of the object help to effect the way the color is viewed so instead of blear you'd see a darker image due to the shadow.

Arbitrary Color

This art was created by Pierre Bonnard in 1917, and was titled Summer. This is considered an arbitrary color. As defined it means it is a color that has no realistic or natural relation to the object that is depicted as a blue horse or purple cow but may have an emotional or expressive significance. I don't know when the last time i saw a blue tree but I'm sure it wouldn't be on planet earth. To the artist he might of been trying too send a message or express him self emotionally but to look at it in a realistic point of view this is to be considered an arbitrary color. And as the other arrow depicts the yellow people, just like the tree might have meaning behind it but its not a realistic image.

Chiaroscuro

This image was created by Paul Colin and was called Jean-Pierre Aumont. It was made in the 1930's. This is what I'd call chiaroscuro. The face on the man in which the arrows are pointing to clearly depict the definition of chiaroscuro. It means the use of light and dark, to create the effect of three dimensional, modeled surfaces. As you could see in the mad the front of his face is of a lighter color while as you continue back it gets darker and darker. This makes it look three dimensional. The shading by the nose and facial features also give it a realistic feel to it as if your looking at a real photograph.

Hatching

This image was created by Mary Cassatt and is titled Study for "Evening"
Under the Lamp Two Women at a Lamp. It was made in 1879-80. Hatching is defined as an area of closely spaced parallel lines or hatches. As the arrows indicated the hatches in this piece of art are used to create a darker part of the image. The closer the parallel lines are the darker the part of the art seems to look. The lines are vivid and extensive in this image almost everything would be hatching from the heads, to the clothing and even the lamp and table.
